Venice and the Veneto Venice, La Serenissima. It is enough to marvel at how a cluster of swampy islands in a brackish lagoon could become an enchanting city of floating palaces. The Veneto, that nearby swath of terra firma, has served for centuries as Venice's kitchen garden. Sixteenth century property owners in need of a villa from which to oversee their plantings had only to consult the local architect, Andrea Palladio. Today his villas dot the landscape. Their balanced proportions and harmony of scale continue to define our notion of home. In celebration two years ago of his 500th anniversary, a number of these villas were newly opened to the public. But the Palladio's villas are only a starting point. Of all our trips, Venice and the Veneto is perhaps the most sumptuous.
