Small-group tours to special destinations throughout Italy
March 14 to 22, 2019
Two places available
On this eight-day tour of Rome and Umbria, we savor what are, for me, some of the most beautiful paintings in all of Italy. While we do visit a museum or two, most of these artworks are still where they were meant to be: in churches, libraries or palaces. In other words, this is a chance to see great art in situ. We will also have the opportunity to connect with Umbria today: its artisan traditions, its agriculture, and its people. Indeed one of the highlights of this trip, in addition to the surfeit of beautiful and delicious meals, is our program of evening "cocktail conversations" with local Perugini.
Gardens and Villas of Tuscany
October 14 to 20, 2019
Florence Prologue: October 12 and 13
Two places available
Originally, I’d planned to offer a six-day tour of gardens and villas inTuscany: 3 nights in Florence, 2 in Siena, a final night at the Rome airport, and a dozen or so beautiful properties in Tuscany.
“But what about Florence?” several of our regular travelers asked. A reasonable question.
So we’re now offering a Florence Prologue: 3 days of visiting favorite and for the most part out-of-the-way sites in this deeply historic city.

Venice and the Veneto
April 3 to 12, 2019
Venice and the Veneto: a city of floating palaces and the adjacent mainland that for centuries served as a kitchen garden and as well as a buffer from invaders, be they barbarians from the north or avaricious Popes from the south. On this trip, we divide our time between both the mainland, dotted with the architectural wonders of Andrea Palladio, and the islands, where magical moments appear at every bridge and embankment.
Sicily, November 2019
November 5 to 15, 2019
Sicily is our most popular trip. Conquered or crisscrossed by Ancient Greeks and Romans, Phoenicians, Normans, Aragonese, Spanish Bourbons and even, more recently, Allied troops, this small island offers an astonishingly rich cultural heritage in a setting of spectacular beauty.
An island we return to each November, Sicily continues to dazzle and amaze us.
Borderlands: Friuli and the Alto Adige
September 19 to 27, 2018
Before there were maps and boundaries, “borderlands” described the indeterminate areas dividing nations. Hovering between Italy and Austria, Friuli and the Alto Adige with their cultural ambiguites are modern-day borderlands. German is overheard as often as Italian and strudel appears on most menus. Art and architecture, similarly, are as much indebted to the northern Longobards as they are to the ancient Romans. Moreover, in the villages, you can still buy lederhosen.
The best of both worlds, Friuli and the Alto Adige, nestle amidst rich farmland at the base of the Alps.
The trip starts in Verona and ends in Mira, a short distance from Venice’s Marco Polo airport.
Whenever and to wherever you choose
With no templates or fixed itineraries, we prefer to work closely with families, couples or groups of friends to create a trip that exceeds expectations. One of the joys of designing these "Bespoke Tours" is pairing travelers, be they 8 or 80, trained art historians or wine merchants, seasoned travelers or neophytes, billionaires or graduate students, with trips that suit their interests, budgets and dreams.
We have travelled with Italian Journeys each year since 2001. These trips have given us the most wonderful travel experience of our lives. Nancy and Libby have a remarkable knack of including both famous sights and not-so-famous sights on their trips, and often the latter are as interesting as or more interesting than the former. Finally, Nancy's extraordinary knowledge of Italy's history and culture gives their trips a dimension that we have particularly appreciated. It simply doesn't get better than Italian Journeys!
